HERA (Heavy Engineering Research Association), the metals-based industry advocate, joined the plight in the ongoing sustainability case of steel vs timber last month when CEO Terry Coyle identified many carbon-friendly benefits to using steel that government timber enthusiasts had failed to bring to the table when weighing up the pros and cons for each.

On speaking with Construction News, Coyle highlighted that there is a misconception around the sustainability of steel and it being less sustainable than wood.

Other points for discussion included the use of embodied carbon emission to compare the two. This calculation focuses on the emissions created at the point of initial manufacture and does not consider the entire life cycle of each material, a measure that would favour steel given it is infinitely recyclable and done so at a rate of 72%.  The recyclability component of steel is a huge emission offset compared to timber which only grows in carbon impact when it meets a rather toxic end-of-life process.

Many more valid points like these were raised in the article making both a super interesting read and our customers glad to be in a building business with a steel conscience. Read more here.
